Website Builder Cost: What You Will Really Pay

A practical total-cost checklist for comparing DIY platforms with a professional build, without being distracted by introductory prices.

Start with the correct plan

A free or entry plan may not support a custom domain, payments, booking, enough storage, collaborators, or the required integrations. Identify the lowest plan that can operate the intended website, then use its normal renewal price in the calculation.

Pricing pages and promotions change. Record the date, billing term, currency, VAT treatment, cancellation conditions, and what happens after any free domain or promotional period ends.

Add the costs outside the headline subscription

A professional setup may also need a domain, business email, appointment software, forms, cookie or consent tools, premium templates, image libraries, stock management, backups, and third-party automation. Some are included on one platform and separate on another.

  • Domain registration and annual renewal
  • Business email for each required mailbox
  • Bookings, memberships, forms, or marketing apps
  • Premium themes, templates, or specialist blocks
  • Payment processing and any platform transaction fee
  • External help for setup, design, copy, SEO, or repairs

Cost ecommerce separately

An online shop adds product photography, descriptions, categories, inventory, delivery rules, returns, taxes, payment processing, and ongoing merchandising. Compare the complete operating cost, not only the website plan.

Shopify and other commerce platforms publish payment and third-party transaction fees by plan. Squarespace also varies commerce and digital-content fees. Use the current official figures for the business's country and expected payment method.

Put a value on your time

Track realistic hours for planning, learning the editor, writing, image preparation, responsive adjustments, accessibility, forms, testing, and future changes. Multiply by an honest value for the owner's time, even if no cash leaves the account.

This is not an argument that DIY is always wrong. A capable owner may enjoy the work and gain useful control. It is a reminder that a £20 subscription and forty unpaid hours are not a £20 website.

Compare three-year totals

Create one line for year one and one for annual operation after that. Include likely redesign or migration work if the temporary setup will not scale. Ask professional suppliers to separate one-off work from recurring charges so the comparison is fair.

For context, Standard Web Co's current focused offer is £200 to launch and £9 a month for hosting and care: £308 across the first twelve months, then £108 a year at today's price. That offer is for scoped small-business sites, not every ecommerce or custom-software requirement.

Takeaway — The honest comparison is the full cost of reaching and maintaining the required business outcome.
