What we do

Four things, done properly.

Kitchens

Designed with you, built in our workshop, fitted by the same people who made it. Solid timber or painted, to the millimetre of your room.

from £6,400

Staircases

Straight flights, winders and full open-tread rebuilds in oak, ash or walnut. Templated on site so it fits the house you actually have.

from £3,200

Fitted furniture

Wardrobes, alcove units, home offices, boot rooms. The awkward corners of a house are usually where the best joinery goes.

from £1,850

Doors & windows

About us

Started by Jim Dovetail in 1974. Still a family firm.

Jim started out making sash windows for tenement flats in the West End. His son Alan took over in 1998, and these days Alan’s daughter Rachel runs the workshop side of things.

We’ve stayed deliberately small — four joiners and an apprentice. It means the person who quotes your job is the person who builds it, and you’re not handed off to a project manager who’s never held a chisel.

We’ll also tell you when something isn’t worth doing. Plenty of jobs we’ve turned down would have paid well and not lasted.

How a job runs, start to finish.

01

We come and measure

A free visit, an hour or so. We look at the space, talk through what you want and take proper measurements.

02

You get a fixed price

Written down, itemised, valid for 90 days. It includes materials, labour, fitting and taking the rubbish away.

03

We build it

Most of the work happens in the workshop in Kirkintilloch, so your house isn't a building site for a month.

04

We fit it and clean up

One team, start to finish. You get a snagging visit six weeks later whether you ask for one or not.

We'd been quoted nearly double by a kitchen showroom for something half as good. Alan came out, measured up, and three weeks later we had a kitchen that actually fits the room.

Fiona M. · Bearsden

They rebuilt our staircase in a 1900s tenement without touching the original cornicing. Meticulous, tidy, and they warned us honestly about what wasn't worth doing.
